Prophet Musa a.s : An Excellent Role Model

Image
If you study the Glorious Quran with in-depth reflection, you’ll be struck by how often Allah mentions Prophet Musa a.s in the Book, in one context or other. From his infancy to adulthood, to his family and communal life, Allah mentions him a total of 169 times in the Quran! I wondered what qualities this Prophet of Allah must have possessed that endeared him so much to Allah, that He chose him for Himself, had a private conversation with him, and granted him Prophet-hood? “And mention in the Book, Musa; Behold, he was a chosen one, and was an apostle, a Prophet” [19:51] وَاصْطَ نَعْتُكَ لِنَفْسِي “And I have chosen you for Myself [O Musa].” [20:41] There are, on close pondering, several qualities of Prophet Musa that shine out. Wasting no time in turning to Allah: Once a man from the slave-tribe of Bani Israel called out for help as a Coptic (Pharaoh’s tribesman) wrangled with him in the street. Musa [may Allah’s peace be upon him] rushed to defend him, accidentally ki...

The Message of the Qur’an

Image
The Quran, according to Muslim belief, is a book of revelations from God. Today, it exists in the form of a book, but all the 114 chapters of the Quran were not revealed at one time. They were sent bit by bit, according to circumstances, over a period of 23 years. The study of the Quran tells us that it is individual-based rather than system-oriented. That is, the actual target of the holy book is to change the thinking of the individual. Changing the system is not the Quran’s direct objective. For the system is subservient to the individual and not vice versa. That is why the utmost emphasis is placed on inculcating right thinking in man. Yet, it is not the method of the Quran to set out everything in advance, in detail. It rather encourages individuals to think for themselves along the proper lines, so that they may discover for themselves the great truths of life. In educational terminology this is called the discovery method. Islamic teachings can be summed up under tw...

Quran: For All Mankind

Image
The Qur’an is a sacred book sent by the Lord of all creation. It is a book for all human beings. It was in the seventh century AD that Islam came to the world. According the Islamic belief, God sent the same religion to every nation that is, Islam. The only distinctive quality of Islam, as regards to Prophet Muhammad is that while the messages sent to previous prophets got distorted, the original text of the message sent to Prophet Muhammad has been fully preserved due to the availability of paper (papyrus) in its crude form at the time and with the invention of the printing press in times to come. That is why, now, for later generations (after the emergence of Islam) the greatest and the only source of knowledge of the right concept of God, in its pristine form, is Islam. Anyone who wants to grasp the true concept of God has no choice but to turn to the Quran. As we learn from the scriptures, God had sent all the previously revealed books so that man might be informed of t...

Quran: The Book of Guidance

Image
Read in the name of your Lord who created - created man from clots of congealed blood. Read! Your Lord is the Most Bountiful One, Who by the pen, taught man what he did not know. Indeed, man transgresses in thinking himself self-sufficient. For to your Lord all things return. [Surat ul Alaq: 1-8] These verses of the Qur’an were the first to be revealed to the Prophet Muhammad. They tell us what God’s purpose was in choosing this particular way of sending His revelations through His messengers, namely, to inform man of what would otherwise have been impossible for him to learn on his own. For example, Man leads his life in the present world for a fixed period of time, then passes away. During his life-span he appears to be free. This gives rise to two kinds of misunderstandings. One is that man’s life is nothing but what it appears to be from birth to death, and the other is that man is not going to be taken to task for his actions. It was to put an end to this ignorance...
